Some people have said that sports tests a person's physical skills and endurance. If so, what about bowling? That's not really an endurance sport. It tests skill, though.
What category does pool/billiards come under? What about darts?
What about figure skating, which tests skills and endurance as well as other things, but is a solo or pair activity rated by judges. Would then ballroom dancing be considered a sport? Or any dance?
And what about stage combat - the kind of sword fighting you see in movies? That takes great skill, endurance, control, but like figure skating and ballroom dancing, it is choreographed. People are judged in it when they go for their certification. Could this be considered a sport? It's not really a game, but it can be considered an art.
I'm just so confused. Perhaps there isn't a clear line? I would really like to get some help on understanding the difference between sports and games. What is the difference between a game, sport, and an art?
you need to keep things simple. a game is played for sheer fun. who cares who wins or loses. it's just a game.
a sport is divided into teams and an effort is made to have enough skill over the other team to beat them and win.
I don't know why you threw art in, really, but I'll take a stab and say some people probably view some games as an art. like golf. the art of perfecting your stance and swing is a seperate pursuit from winning or losing or having fun. it is a personal challenge.
I hope that helps. it seems very clear to me, at least! :)What is the difference between a game, sport, and an art?
According to dictionary.com:
sport-an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Game-a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators. (it can also be a single occasion of a sport "a baseball game")
art-the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
With that out of the way....there is really no answer to your question...it is all mater of personal opinion. I once heard a comic say...if you can go to dinner without showering or changing your clothes after your "sport"...it's not a sport...it's a skill (like golfing). It was also said that if you can not physically do something to hinder your opponents ability to score....then it is not a sport.
For the art part....art, in the traditional sense, would not cross over into the game/sport world. I think it is referring to art in a sense of perfecting a skill. I know art to be...an artist creating something to show others their view of the world. I guess a sport being an art would also be based on personal opinion and your interpretation of what you know to be art.
So again...no real answer...if you think cheerleading is a sport...it's a sport...at least to you. :)
