"This method of scoring worked well in the 1920s and 1930s, when the football was rounder at the ends (similar to a modern rugby ball). Early football stars such as Jim Thorpe and Paddy Driscoll were skilled drop-kickers."
"The only successful drop kick in the last sixty-plus years in the NFL was by Doug Flutie, the backup quarterback of the New England Patriots, against the Miami Dolphins on January 1, 2006 for an extra point after a touchdown pass by third-string quarterback Matt Cassel."|||doug flutie did one for the pats last year just for fun cuz they were crushing first since 41
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story鈥?/a>|||They still drop kick punts, don't they?|||Doug Flutie did it two or three years ago when he was with the Patriots. Most people had never seen a drop kick before and had no idea what just happened.|||Doug Flutie drop-kicked a field goal in his last season with the Patriots. It was hysterical.|||Doug Flutie did it for an extra point when he played for the Patriots in 2005|||I think New England did it once a year or two ago when they were way ahead. First time in 40 something years.|||yes they outlawed it in the 70's i think|||they used it all the time back in the day
before the first Superbowl that is
in fact you can still employ it today if they choose to it just no one practices for it|||I doubt it is used in the pro's at all for many years and the reason is you have to let the ball hit the ground before you can then punt for a field goal. The amount of pressure most special teams units can put onto a kicker would make this a very unlikely thing to try.|||Last i saw was Flutie a few years back against Nick Saban's Dolphins.
For the person who does not know about a drop kick, it is dropping the ball to the ground and kicking it off the bounce.|||yes. flutie did in the pro football|||it was used last year by doug flutie|||When I was in HS ball our extra point and short field goal kicker drop kicked. I've never seen it in a college or pro game, but I'm sure it has happened. When Jim McMahon had a short stint in Green Bay I seen him boot one about 50 yards at a practice.
