Do you consider Video Games a form of art?

I am doing a paper for school on whether or not we consider video games as art.



One of my tasks is that I have to get at least 10 opinions on the subject.



SO would you guys do me a favor and tell me if you consider video games an artform? Or are they purely for entertainment?

I'm of the opinion that they are an art for exactly the reason you suggested they might not be. In Scott McCloud's 'Understanding Comics' he poses a very interesting theory on the definition of art, you should read it, it's very good.

There certainly is a lot of thought and skill that goes into creating a game, and even art most people consider bad is a form of art, just veiwed by the wrong audience.

Having had my pro-Art rant I shall also clarify that I am not however a big fan of video games. If I'm going to pretend to be a heroe and fight bad guys I'm going to run outside with a stick and battle my imagination, its more fun. Plus I always end up killing myself in video games.
