I'm looking to buy a new (desktop) computer and don't really know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with a PC and not a Mac (sorry Apple lovers). I also have a friend who has offered to build me a computer if I'd buy the parts, but this worries me a little, having no warranty, no ways to guarantee fixes, etc... I'm no computer expert and neither is he (he built his own computer however).
I frequently use programs like Adobe Photoshop, and also play games (so a good amount of RAM and a pretty decent graphics card is a must), and other than that I just use the internet, IM programs, etc.
Any and all tips would be much appreciated, from things I should be looking for in my computer to specific brands and models I should check out.
Thanks! What's the best computer I can buy for art and games? [Please see details...]?
Use Cyberpower PC. www.cyberpowerpc.com

Also, I recommend an AMD processor over an Intel processor. The AMD processor is cheaper, and is just as a quality as an Intel processor. In fact AMD processors often outperform a comparable Intel processor. So you get more bang for your buck.
For the Mac users out there the best reason to go PC over MAC can be said in one word OPTIONS. Also for Gamers there is no real alternative for Windows at this time. If not for games I would still buy a PC and use Linux full time instead of Mac. Why? Stability, Security, and OPTIONS. PC simply has more configurability, and customizability than Mac. Also I can find parts for upgrades and repairs anywhere with less difficulty and out of pocket cost.
As far as Windows Vista is concerned you really won't need it, but many online companies are offering free Vista upgrades with your computer purchase.
go to dell.com you can taylor your computer to your needs and they'll build it from scrach to your preferances or you can call dell and talk to a live human that will hear what you want and recamend optionsWhat's the best computer I can buy for art and games? [Please see details...]?
The Dell XPS is supposed to be pretty good when it comes to graphics and games
------- I frequently use programs like Adobe Photoshop, and also play games (so a good amount of RAM and a pretty decent graphics card is a must), and other than that I just use the internet, IM programs, etc. --------
The program you need doesn't come with the computer you need.
But you can surf any PC goes with your price range 1st . . .
And ask your self: "Do I need to go for popularity or
functionality?"
====== I use Windows 2000 =======

hi corndog!
ok, so you say you are "pretty sure" you are sticking with pc... so sounds to me like you are not totally sure.
if u want ur computer for art and games, i can't imagine why u would go with a pc over a mac these days (unless u already have all the software u will need for ur pc).
the iLife software that ships with all macs is awesome - iMovie, Garage Band, iPhoto... and Front Row with movie trailers, etc, etc.
u can get a mac mini for $599 and buy a $99 flat panel display at Fry's and ur set! or get an iMac starting at $999. if u shop at amazon, u may not be required to pay tax or shipping.
check out what i've created on a 20" iMac... almost entirely produced using out-of-the-box mac software (link to my FREE Featured Video Podcast on iTunes):

couple other things to consider:
1. imo, bad time to buy a pc. if u buy now, it will come with xp... but when vista comes out later this year u will want to upgrade... this can be a nightmare.
2. many pc manufacturers and many, many models to choose from. hit and miss out there. not so with mac - u know what ur getting.
good luck!

Betty

Ok since you need the warranty, I would suggest this DELL: XPS 410 for: $2,260 USD.
Now the only modifications I made compared to the default configuration from their website were the processor : changed to a E6600, since the extra 2MB of cache will help you.
And I added an extra 1GIG of system RAM, that will help too.
If you want to save some cash keep the default processor E6300, which will subtract 150$ USD from the price.
This will be a great system for your Photoshop and your games.
I wouldn't let my friend buil me one because as you said NO WARRANTY ! but if you really are considering it id check out his computer to see how things run. but dell lets you build your own computer and they have warrantys that come with it so your getting what you want and a bag of potato chips ( not really ). you can choose what programs i think ? not too sure though check it out dell.com
your answer lies under hp. it is great for gaming(trust me i game every day YEAH) but the only draw back is that it usualy takes a while to upload or downlad the games the first time but after that it is quick easy and painless LOL
www.buyxg.com, they are cheaper than dell and very user friendly to build the computer...you also get to purchase any software for cheap and you can buy pc games for 5 dollars (and others are cheaper than MSRP but more than $5)By the way, good choice on sticking with a PC, they are cheaper and faster. Plus, Macs can't play many games...
