What is your opinion: are video games art?

why do you think that? What is your opinion: are video games art?
If some asshole can draw a can of Cambells soup and call it art then masterpieces such as Final Fantasy, GTA and Bioshock are automatically art since they are higher on the level of artistic ability. You need several types of artists and people with the ability to code to make a video game, and a damn good storyline helps too. And on the plus side gamers aren't as snobby as other art lovers, because everyone hates a snob.
yes its defentaly art.

i'm bored so i won't say why.

How, really, can video games not be art?

The question of videogames being art is no doubt controversial. But, to look at it properly you must put it in to context; to suggest that all videogames are art would be stupid, e.g a racing game. But, I suppose this is where it would be considered an unstable question. The first line of the wikipedia article reads:

"Art is the process or product of deliberately and creatively arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions."

So, a racing game is not really an art, while it might get intense sometimes in a close race, it does not appeal to human emotions like an art form should. So, it is pretty silly to call ALL videogames art, another reason I think many people are so skeptical about this subject is demonstrated in the second sentence:

"In its narrow sense, the word art most often refers specifically to the visual arts, including media such as painting, sculpture, and printmaking."

Thus suggesting that when people think of art, they think of famous paintings like 'The Scream' and the 'Mona Lisa', or Michelangelo's David, and obviously these are not really like videogames.

But, take a look at Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and even games like Grand Theft Auto. At first, they just seem like interactive entertainment meant to be 'fun', and really they are. But, art in the broader sense, art is a medium which is meant to appeal to complex human emotions. Everyone knows that videogames often have advanced stories, equally (if not more) deep than books and films. As an example, take the classic RPG Final Fantasy, particularly Final Fantasy VII, known for having characters with advanced personalities, who are likeable, and our emotions become attached to these characters, (SPOILER WARNING IN THE SINGLE LINE BELOW)

    when Sephiroth killed Aerith/Aeris

, it was considered one of the most iconic moments in videogames, and caused many fans to be shocked, upset, almost to the point of where it seemed real. Now, obviously it wasn't quite like that, but it definately stirred emotions in people who wouldn't usually show their emotions. Just looking on Google and forums will demonstrate this point of the shock factor.

Games like MGS, have complex stories and their 'epicness' also makes its players become attached to fictional characters and a fantasy world. And as the plot develops, it aims to appeal to certain senses and emotions, just as a typical piece of art would. Even games, like Grand Theft Auto do this, which be some (very ignorant) people, is just a game of mindless killing and carjacking. Games use things like satire and just general storytelling to make general points about the world and society, and many art forms have undoubtedly done this.

Another thing I think, is people of older generations just see games as some mindless thing which people and in their teens and their twenties do for fun, which has no real value or meaning to it, and it instantly makes them anti-videogames and to then propose the question of it being an art form would be almost a sin to them.

This is also really a question of philosophy, but for me, videogames have a lot more meaning than most people think, and it's only those who would be known of as 'hardcore gamers' who recognise this. Anyway, post your thoughts. How, really, can video games not be art?
Agreed, video games are totally an art form!

My boyfriend wrote a paper about it once and to even get his prof. to let him write the paper he said, "Well you say film is art right, would you consider Rambo art?"

Not every painting is brilliant art, the same can be said for video games. In fact video games pull together all different forms of art from the animation to the music to the storyline.

    video games = art

How do your kids use their toys, games or art supplies?

Do your kids use their toys exactly as they are meant to?

I never force my kids to play games or use their toys the exact way they are intended. For example, if they want to use the checkers from the checkers game as coins they are allowed as long as they return them to the game. Same with art supplies - my 5 yo daughter loves to draw and cut out shapes. She doesn't really use them for anything but she enjoys doing it and I think it is teaching her valuable skills. My husband makes comments like 'she is wasting the paper' and he tries to correct them with the checkers - 'the checkers are for the game'... I don't think that way - I think they are doing creative things.

Your thoughts? How do your kids use their toys, games or art supplies?
had to laugh on that one. no, they use things for purposes that no human mind had previously conceived. the playing cards being taped into a parachute for the toy people being tossed from the top step come to mind, but there are plenty of other examples. which is fine (and even great) by me and, as in your family, somewhat less fine with my husband.
I agree with you completely. Kids have great imaginations, they think the world is a play ground and somewhere along the way of "growing up" we lose that. I encourage it with my daughter as well. How do your kids use their toys, games or art supplies?
i see it as creative also there using there imagination which is good.
My husband and I are planning on having kids in the next couple of years, and I happen to agree with you, and so does he. Kids are meant to be creative. I never used anything the way it was 'supposed' to be used, and now I am an event planner. I own my own business, and I am doing really well.

I think that part of the reason that so few adults have any imagination is that it is stomped out of them as kids. The items you bought her were for her to enjoy, right? They are supposed to be fun for HER, not your husband. It is not as though the paper is used for something else more 'important' in the house, and the checkers are not damaged by her using them as coins, so what is the issue?

Being creative is key to enjoying life. Good on your daughter, and on you for having fun. Tell your husband to relax, and if he is worried, there are plenty of books and magazines out there that can verify the importance of fantasy and imagination in a child's development. How do your kids use their toys, games or art supplies?
I agree with you to an extent. My children occasionally push the limit by getting into things that don't belong to them because they have come to feel that anything is fair game as long as it is returned. I had to draw the line the day I caught them wanting to play paper dolls with pictures I have of my mother as a child.

I have tried to encourage them to be creative and see the options instead of limitations. Sometimes this has worked for me and sometimes it has had less than pleasant endings. I wish I knew how to create a balance that they understand.

Questions about Mario games (character creation, art)?

I am doing an art piece that we have to look at a piece of art and then draw something new with the elements and principles of design from the art piece into your piece. Well I chose mario and I just wanted to know afew things. Like why is mario fighting turtles and those little brown things? Was there any reason why Shigeru Miyamoto used turtles instead of another creature? What makes Mario art Mario?Questions about Mario games (character creation, art)?
Why did Miyamoto use turtles and mushrooms? (Yes, Goombas are little brown mushrooms, which is weird because Toad's are mushrooms, Mario eats mushrooms, and some levels are giant mushrooms.) Perhaps Miyamoto was high? I kid, I believe he's very respectful, but really, there was not any reason other than he chose to. The original game instructions said the turtles kidnapped the Toads and turned them into bricks, and Mario had to save their princess because only she could turn them back to Toads. Though it makes you wonder about all those bricks Mario smashed on the way. Nonetheless, it was simply a design choice. Turtles and mushrooms everywhere. Why did Miyamoto say a raccoon suit makes Mario fly? Because he's the Mario god and what he says goes. Really, in all I've read about him, he doesn't give a reason.

I CAN tell you why he chose Mario, though. When Miyamoto was choosing what to name Jumpman from the original Donkey Kong arcade, the warehouse owner came in demanding their rent. The warehouse owner's name was Mario Segale. The rest is history.Questions about Mario games (character creation, art)?

Answer if you have one.Can the 80 gig PS3 that comes with MGS4 play ps2 games? And does it have some sort of unnecessary art on it?
80gb PS3 can play about ~80% of the PS2 games, while

    60gb PS3 can play about 100% PS2 games.

The reason being is because 80gb uses hardware while 60gb uses software like the ps2.

If you enjoy role playing games then you will love Mass Effect on the PS3.

This game is groundbreaking in terms of the freedom it gives you in controlling how the story line progresses. The answers you give during conversations with other characters will not only affect how they will react to what you say, but it will also have an impact on the game's ending as well.

Plus, you can even continue playing your character from Mass Effect when you begin playing Mass Effect 2 - one of the most greatly anticipated game releases for 2010.

  • Would you agree that video games are the ultimate form of art?

I am going to be a game and art designer and hopefully direct and create my own video game one day. Think about it

    1. Music. Video games contain music, sounds and instrumentals that can't be found on just any radio station.

    2. Writing is of course used and I've played games that have humorous dialogue and intriguing plots.

    3. Philosophy and morality. Philosophical concepts are often brought up in video games. From religion to different origins of the universe as well as morality.

    4. Interaction and thought. It involves the player's own opinions at times. You are sometimes given a choice if not at least once, to choose want you want to do.

    5. Art. None other than the beautiful animation and level design that makes real life look like crap.

    6. Programming. Any of your technical artists behind the scenes sometimes use their own skills to put little secrets in the game that make you laugh, say wtf, or just love the game even more

    7. Acting. Voice actors and other actors that are used for special effects are used to make things more realistic and give voice to the characters they play.

    8. Inspiration. I and many others, have been inspired to help create more video games and maybe have just been inspired by the concepts within them that in a way help us know more about ourselves.

I'm sure there is other things I haven't said that are great about games too so feel free to add what you think video games offer.Would you agree that video games are the ultimate form of art?
I agree. In a certain sense, they have also replaced Hollywood.Would you agree that video games are the ultimate form of art?
    Art? Undoubtedly.

Ultimate form of art? I wouldn't go that far. It's a virtual experience, and a directed one.

The ultimate form of art is life itself.Would you agree that video games are the ultimate form of art?
You just answered your own question. :) And I agree with you.

How much would you pay for this game art?

How much money would you offer a serious artist to draw art for one game similar to this (background too).

    http://www.girlgamesclub.com/game/unicorn_girl.html

Not the flash coding, just the graphics.

    Honest opinions please.

I'm asking because I'd like to commission an artist to make similar game art for me.How much would you pay for this game art?
I would charge maybe $40 to do the character and the background, $40 to do the dresses, $25 for hair and $25 for accessories. But, there are lots of artists that would charge less.

If you go to www.deviantart.com and post your request on their jobs forum you will get lots of bids for this project.

What's the difference between a game, sport, and art?

I've read the answers to similar questions, but I am still not clear.

Some people have said that sports tests a person's physical skills and endurance. If so, what about bowling? That's not really an endurance sport. It tests skill, though.

What category does pool/billiards come under? What about darts?

What about figure skating, which tests skills and endurance as well as other things, but is a solo or pair activity rated by judges. Would then ballroom dancing be considered a sport?

And what about stage combat - the kind of sword fighting you see in movies? That takes great skill, endurance, control, but like figure skating and ballroom dancing, it is choreographed. People are judged in it when they go for their certification. Could this be considered a sport? It's not really a game, but it can be considered an art.

I'm just so confused. Perhaps there isn't a clear line? I would really like to get some help on understanding the difference between sports and games. What's the difference between a game, sport, and art?
an art is something everybody admires. a sport is something everybody admires and can participate in. a game is a form of entertainment. What's the difference between a game, sport, and art?
A sport is real entertainment.A game is graphics you're controlling.Art is beautiful real life pictures.

Do you consider games to be an art?

I don't. But if you do, give examples and why you consider it in the same league as film, music, literature, dance, painting etcDo you consider games to be an art?
    No. Water!!!
Yes, because it's a creative medium that can be used as a form of expression or can explore the human condition.

    Braid
    BioShock
    Beyond Good and Evil
    Deus Ex

Edit: I'd like to take this opportunity to say that ALL games are art. Art is not a compliment, it's a descriptive. However, not all games are "high art". Call of Duty is the video game equivalent of Transformers. The five games I listed are examples of high art.Do you consider games to be an art?
what part of games.... the cover art... or the logo designs,, or the musical scores ,,,, or is it the charactor design .. perhaps its the storylines you mean....
ok enough of me being a smartie.... of course they have elements in them that are art .
I believe some are, because you get a mix of great music and ambient sound with great gameplay.Do you consider games to be an art?
Yes I do. All of the graphics in video games are awesome and are a form of art :)

Question about plagiarism in art at University?

I'm studying Games Art, and I'm required to do a painting of my chosen game (which in this case is Metal Gear Solid) in full colour. In the first semester I did a tonal drawing of a character, and I want to paint the same one. I was just wondering if it's in any way plagiarism if I just paint on the drawing, instead of drawing it all out again. Thanks.Question about plagiarism in art at University?
Or you could draw it all out, avoid laziness, and not have to worry about plagiarism in the first place!Question about plagiarism in art at University?
At many schools, submitting the same piece of work in 2 classes without the prior approval of *both* professors is a form of academic dishonesty. (Sometimes it's called plagiarism, and sometimes it's not.) If I were considering doing what you're considering doing, I would worry that I might end up on the wrong side of that rule, and I would ask my professor (in the current class) whether this would count as submitting the same piece of work twice.

I do believe that video games are a form of art. I think they are like an interactive movie. It does take a great imagination to create a deep storyline, likable characters, awesome character and enemy design, and fun gameplay. The video gamers out there,do you see video games as an art form?
I agree whole-heartedly. People who say video-games are only for the immature and stupid are just kidding themselves. The video-game industry is basically the "guinea pig" for companies like Microsoft. So in that sense, I think that videogames always have been, are, and will be a very important form of art to society whether people admit it or not.The video gamers out there,do you see video games as an art form?
I think so, just look at the games like chrono trigger
Indeed; games are a complete product of creativity. A game who has been well polished in all aspects is like a flawless movie or book. Games like Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, Out of this World, Wing Commander, and Ultima are a testament to this.

  • When I get of age, I want to make the art for a game, create a fantasy world. What is that job called?

An MMORPG is my favorite type of game. Games like World of Warcraft, Rift, Guild Wars.. I want to make a blank computer screen of nothing, into an interactive world of art for people who love to play games. What is this job called? When I get of age, I want to make the art for a game, create a fantasy world. What is that job called?
I've heard various labels... Game Designer, 3D Artist, 3D Modeler, etc.

The important thing is if you mean the environments, objects, characters themselves then you'd want to focus on getting into a college program with 3D modeling and animation, especially one with the focus on game design. Both animation and game design of that style use the same kind of software in process of creating the visuals.
Games designer. Good luck with it! Hopefully I see your designs on upcoming games :-)When I get of age, I want to make the art for a game, create a fantasy world. What is that job called?
That usually isn't one person's job... You could try Graphic Design... 3d modeling. or graphic artist.
Video game designer. You have to be 21 in the us to be a video game designerWhen I get of age, I want to make the art for a game, create a fantasy world. What is that job called?
to be more specific it is the graphic designer for a video game designing company
The exact title of the job is a:

    Video Game Graphics Deisgner

What does a full-time character designer for video games usually get paid?

My daughter either wants to go into computer animation or game art and we are trying to find what careers this will lead to and what they get paid. What does a full-time character designer for video games usually get paid?
It really varies with experience - more senior positions earn more highly. If you are looking for a direct comparison, someone first starting work in either would probably begin at around the same salary (perhaps about £25k/$50k, though it varies a lot with different companies), but there is better scope in moving up to higher earnings and promotion in computer animation, and more demand for computer animators. There are a lot of good artists out there but a video game only needs a few development artists, and many more animators than that (for feature films, the animators might number in the hundreds) so good animators are more in demand.

However, the two skills compliment each other beautifully and she may well find herself in a role where both are required - many smaller games companies have development artists which double as character modellers and animators as well (I'm currently looking for a job in this capacity myself). There's no real urgency in choosing, as there are college courses in which you can study both drawing and computer animation, which would be a good route for her to take.

An advantage is that the skills required for the video game industry overlap with the animation industry and roles in a number of others (television, film and advertising, for example), so it's a great field to go into - the entertainment industry appears to be endlessly expanding!

Good luck! What does a full-time character designer for video games usually get paid?
Keep in mind that within the game industry, “design” is totally separate from art. In games, design is the process of coming up with the gameplay, using writing and math. Most game designers can’t draw above a stick figure level.

For game art, there’s a game industry salary survey from 2006 here: http://gamecareerguide.com/features/266/… that lists Artists on page 3. Average salary across all levels of experience is $66,000. If you live in an expensive state like California you'll get paid a bit more.

Talented 3D artists typically never have trouble finding work, particularly if you live somewhere like Los Angeles that has both the game industry and 3D art for movies. Within games, artists typically move from Junior Artist up through Senior Artist, then to Lead Artist and Art Director.

Game artists are typically on salary, so it can be very steady, comfortable work at any level. I have an artist friend who has been at the same (world famous) game studio for almost 17 years. They’ve offered him Lead positions repeatedly, but he doesn’t want to manage other people, so he’s been comfortably working away on their games his entire career.

Absolutley, the amount of thought and creativity that goes into their production is mind blowing. The ideas have to come from somewhere, the artist is just using the computer as a media for his art. Not to mention, most of these people can draw freehand better than most people will ever dream of. Is there an art book in existence for the video game Final Fantasy Tactics?

One of my favorite video games of all time is Final Fantasy Tactics originally released for the Playstation system. It has such a vast array of characters, many of my favorites are not even playable or are considered 'minor' characters, such as Teta Hyral or Izlude Tingel.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any art book for the game with full character art of the cast of this game? I have searched for years and asked around with no results yielded. Any clue?Is there an art book in existence for the video game Final Fantasy Tactics?

What majors would i take to become a concept artist for games?

I want to go to the art institute of Kansas City, but i can't get a straight answer when i look at any of their web sites. Do i take game art and design, illustration, digital media, ect.. can anyone help? What majors would i take to become a concept artist for games?
The school won't get you there. It will just get you debt.

Study online yourself, read online tutorials and get your own software.

If its one of the Art Institutes run by EDMC (all of them that use the

AI logo), avoid them like a plague. They're not an art school

employers take seriously. They're open enrollment, they take ANYONE.

They just want the financial aid from the government that you are

    entitled to.

If you ask me, they're an elaborate corporate scam to funnel as many

Government Pell grants and guaranteed loans out of students as they

can and leave the students with the bill.

They're like McDonald's of Art "Colleges". They're a chain that is

popping up everywhere. They buy out dying schools, rename them, keep

    the accreditation.

They may seem like they would be good, but it is all smoke and

mirrors. Pretty building with pretty computers. Meanwhile, it will

    just ruin your life.

The market demand they say they're meeting is not the demand of the

Job market, its the demand of the students. Students that graduated AI

are struggling to get jobs and have over more than $50,000+ or

$90,000+ in debt depending on what degree they went for. Degrees that

are worthless in the job market.

Basically, AI is a degree mill. They use bloated success stats and

circle logic to back them up.

They count students working at Toys R Us as in the field. Avoid them

if you want to actually have a decent future.

If you really want to pursue your passion, go to a community college,

study fine art, and then transfer into a state school. It will be

cheaper and the money you save you can buy your own equipment and

STILL have money left over for a better future.

Their job leads are bogus, they go to Monster, Craigslist, and career

builder just like everyone else. Their top employer is HOME DEPOT

(Check their own website) and I guarantee none of those are art jobs.

Don't make the same mistake my friends and I did. We'll be paying for

it for the rest of our lives.

If you go with AI you'll be folding clothes at Target or hawking video

games at Toys R Us for $8.25 an hour and struggling to pay $90,000+

with bill collectors haunting your every waking moment for the REST OF

YOUR LIFE with no way to stop them because there is no bankruptcy

    protection on Student loans.

Please please please make sure you check out these news articles

below. Many are accounts from students, staff, and teachers of AI.

Feel free to check YELP ("Filtered results" as well.)

What you do with this information is your choice, I just want to make

sure you know everything before listening to one of their recruiters

sales pitch. Remember, they're paid sales people. Not your friend.

College may be expensive but what these guys are pulling is straight

    out highway robbery.

And if those news articles aren't enough, check the news. The

New York Times, Bloomberg, and, CNBC all have a story about the

department of Justice acting on a lawsuit against EDMC for illegally

    paying their recruiters.

  • Are there any drawing/art games for the DS? (not Scribblenauts)?

I'm planning to get a DSi when this tax season rolls around, you know, with my refund... So, I want to know if there are any drawing games for the DS. Not a game game, like Scribblenauts, but just a drawing thing. Where you can just draw and add effects and stuff. I'm guessing there should be, being that you use a stylus, and that Nintendo would probably want you to use it.Are there any drawing/art games for the DS? (not Scribblenauts)?

Impossible to get a career in anime and game art?

I keep hearing people say the field is highly competitive and you shouldn't even bother. Is it really that "impossible" to get a career in anime? I also hear game art design is really hard to?

So what's the deal? Should I not bother trying to get into these career paths? What is a good path for someone who likes to draw?Impossible to get a career in anime and game art?
That's the career I'm working on right now in college. Every job you try is competitive, so even if you switched your career it's still going to be tough for you (so your not having an easy life either way). A good path for you is to use your brain and stop listening to others who have no real clue of what they're talking about. Besides you will not get a career in anime right away, you have to work your way up to get there (and most people do not figure this out until later on in life).Impossible to get a career in anime and game art?
It certainly is hard to get jobs in existing, big-name companies, i.e. IW or Nintendo, but there are startup anime and game companies that always need new hirees.

If you like art (and a bit of design and engineering) I suggest go for architecture, it involves a great deal of art and design, but the degree lends itself to many professions.

If I can't afford College, How else can I learn Video Game Concept Art Techniques?

So i took Fine Arts for 4 years and get my degree in 2 months. BUT near the end of it found that I would rather do art for video games or TV.

However, my University doesn't teach you how to make a portfolio. (they instead teach you where to find food when you starve)

I have the skills already to paint, traditionally and digitally, but lack the knowledge on what Concept artists are looking for in a portfolio.

Any tutorials, suggestions or sites you can hook me up with?If I can't afford College, How else can I learn Video Game Concept Art Techniques?
The thing that art and trade schools don't tell you up front is that you can get their entire education of the net for free. You just need to know where to look. If you already fill comfortable with fine arts you're well on your way. I'm not sure if you already are aware, but some sites to check out are www.conceptart.org and www.cgsociety.org. I would go ahead and make a portfolio on CG society. Its a pretty legit place to ask for help and get your work critted by pros.

That said, games are an extremely competitive industry. Most studios do not not hire entry level concept artists. Keep in mind that you are also competing with guys that have 10 years of experience and a ton of triple A titles under their belts. A lot of people work their way up from being something else such as a 3D modeler or animator. Your best bet is to pick up some additional skills such as 3D or story boarding. Heck, your first job might not even be in games but cartoons on TV.

You'll need a website and a digital reel. Very rarely do companies accept hard copy media anymore. Here's an example from an animation student who's now working as a concept artist:

Are there any video games that you would consider legitimate art?

All games are art and beautiful in there own unique way from the detail in a sports player on an EA game to the amazing scenery of oblivion. My favorite art type games where you take the time to look around at the environment and character are: Mass effect 1%26amp;2, Oblivion/skyrim, Assassins creed1-4, Bioshock, and Battlefield 3 pc version. The amount of attention to detail is amazing that you have to pause from the story to look around to full appreciate the time taken into each design. Are there any video games that you would consider legitimate art?
The game "Dinner Date" was produced specifically as art. You play the role of the main character's nervous motions and twitches, from drumming fingers, to staring at the clock, to drinking wine and eating bread.

It's recommended to be played while drinking a specific type of wine.
Well since art is anything that requires creativity and imagination, I'd say all video games are art. Maybe some more than others (for example, Shadow of the Colossus is more artistic than Madden 2012), but they are all technically art.Are there any video games that you would consider legitimate art?
Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Skyrim. Both have beautiful graphics, great gameplay, and the movements in ACR just make it a masterpiece.

Someone will have more personal experiences than I with this specific major, but I do know many universities require linear algebra. Don't be intimidated by math, approach it like you'd approach something you enjoy, and spend a significant amount of time (while taking breaks when frustrated).

I would get a HP laptop. What laptop is good for games, music, art, and pictures? ?
Ooh this is tricky. First off, let me tell you that there aint a lot of laptops with low price and good quality. You pay low price, you get low quality. Vice versa. However, I would recommend Dell XPS or Alienware Area-51. Alienware Area-51 is meant to be a high-end gaming laptop and is a bit on the expensive side...and let me warn you, Alienware has had lots of problems with customer service. The HP Pavillion notebooks and HP HDX notebooks are also worth considering. It's the Christmas season so everything will be much cheaper.

What do you learn in Game Art at college?

What are you learning to do by getting a game art degree at college. Such as Full Sail University. What do you learn in Game Art at college?
The program is designed to teach a person an understanding of all elements involved in generating 3D content to be used in a game environment. The first twelve months are spent getting a base knowledge in 3D arts, and building on traditional art skills as related to industry needs. The months that follow a student is immersed in understanding how to work in the constraints of a game. Building animations, environments, models, and textures. The students are also currently building a final game project with students from the Game Development program.

This is the short version of the answer to your question.

Video Games as an Art Form?

Many people say that video games are not art. Though movies and paintings are. Why cant a video game which has movies and can have beautiful landscapes and portraits?

Call me what you will i honestly could not care.Video Games as an Art Form?
I think one of the reasons why video games aren't taken seriously as an art form is because people think video games are just for kids. Another thing, Art History spans from the first cave paintings to the present day, making video games a relatively new medium. Usually when something is new, it is challenged and mostly rejected, but I do think that in the future, video games will be given the chance to grow and be taken more seriously.Video Games as an Art Form?
I think it's because some people think of it as something that you can play with rather than saying "oh this looks like a really neat artwork, I wonder how they designed this"? I consider it an art form, but to others they just think it's a tool. Also the fact that it's not traditional is a problem to the really old artists who haven't done digital art (or if they did they don't like it).Video Games as an Art Form?
I certainly think computer games are art. This is speaking as someone who both plays and designs computer games as hobbies.

Of course, not all art is aesthetically pleasing, and in many fields, often the works considered the most artistic are really quite ugly.
A new way of art. I think art can be as diverse as the human mind.

How do I organize art supplies and other miscellaneous things?

So, I recently had cabinets installed in my son's play area. I have lots of space to put play-doh, bubbles, art supplies, games, etc but I've just been staring at empty cabinets for a couple of days now. I have no idea how to go about storing these things so that they can be easily taken out and put back in neatly. Any ideas? How do I organize art supplies and other miscellaneous things?
I got these plastic shoeboxes from Bed, Bath, %26amp; Beyond. I also think you can get them from Walmart. I think 5 come in a pack and they cost $10. I put all the playdough in one box, all the markers in another, etc. Plus you can stick a label on them (like a picture of whatever is in the box). They are stackable and portable. I also stick some things in gallon sized plastic ziplock bags.
we used to do baskets and containers but they would just get broken or lost so i started seperating everything and putting them into ziplocs... it makes things a lot easier to find and get out, keeps it much much cleaner, is a lot cheaper to replace... it just works much better i find. We have one of those rolling drawer things... like 5 drawers high... we keep all their art stuff in there in the ziploc bags, the kids can access them whenever they wantHow do I organize art supplies and other miscellaneous things?

What are the best universities/colleges for game art design?

I have about 2 1/2 years until i finish highschool and i need to find at least 2 more options in terms of universities/colleges that is woul like to attend. I already have info from Full Sail University and so far, that is my number 1. I looked into it and i found out that I want to go into game art. I really need your help! Oh! I forgot to mention that I would prefer to go to California. What are the best universities/colleges for game art design?
University of Southern California (USC) in L.A. has a very reputable game design program. I think the degree is Computer Science with an emphasis in game development.

Which games/movies/animes have the best Art you've seen?

OK, my question is really simple. I need no clash of opinions or who thinks they're right and what not, all I need is OPINIONS, yours on what you people think is the best Art you've ever seen in a movie or game.

For example, LOTR wasn't original in terms of Theme but it had a few good Art here and there (namely the Ents and Armored Trolls) and of course games can include things like Sudeki (fantasy mixed with Tech) and anime can go all the way to Vash.

So put in the names, and of course, you can make the list as long as you want...infact, the longer with more titles, the better it is.

Ready? Set...Post away!Which games/movies/animes have the best Art you've seen?
The best anime art I've seen, hands down is the Ghost in the Shell Movies and tv show (stand Alone Complex). I do love the stories in them, but there are better plots in others. Akira would also be in the same catergory, which was noted to have rivaled any disney animation done at the same time. Others would include any of Hayao Miyazaki's Movies, or perhaps Wings of Honnimaise.

I guess you're looking for motion graphics, but the japanese Manga for Akira has some of the best pen work I've seen in any graphic novel or comic book to date.

Squaresoft has always done beautifully with cut scenes in the final fantasy games (Since FF7), as well as the movies they have produced (just get over the fact that they are the worst plots to any film ever made).

Games, however, are sort of evening out in graphic quality now that 3d rendering is the basis of almost all animation, so its getting to a point where games don't really have bad graphics anymore.Which games/movies/animes have the best Art you've seen?
Movie Constantine was pretty good...Matrix was good too.

Game Halo2 and Halo3 rocks...They're just so realistic.

Should video games be considered art?

Explain your opinion, please.Should video games be considered art?
Of course! anything man made is an art.Should video games be considered art?
if playing no. but drawing and making i think so. someone said "Art of Gaming"Should video games be considered art?
its obviously not art actually playing the game but when developers make a game they incorporate art into it (the graphical style, the dialogue, the character/creature designs, the music). Video games in a way are a combination of different art forms
I think so. The about of design and imagination the goes into some of them makes me feel they are an art form. Plus the literal art of the graphics is definitely art.

I'm having trouble finding schools that have both majors, however, due to the large amount of technical schools that offer his major. What's the difference between Game Art & Design and Web Design & Interactive Media?

I was looking at the Art Institutes website. I want to become a computer animator, and I do want to work in the video game field, but not just there! I also want to work in the movie and video making part too. Maybe in something else as well; I want to keep my options open while only getting a bachelor's degree in one thing. Which one is best suited to my career interest? What's the difference between Game Art %26amp; Design and Web Design %26amp; Interactive Media?
    EDIT:Be sure to read this:
    http://www.artinstitutes.edu/denver/medi鈥?/a>

I don't know if you're in Denver or not, but it should still apply as to what it covers.

I'm sure you already know what game art and design is, But web design and interactive media would be completely unrelated.

Web design would be creating websites, and interactive media would be using technologiessuch as Adobe Flash and HTML5 in your websites.

I would make sure though that their game art and design covers animation. As it could just be concept art, or even modelling, rather than rigging and animationWhat's the difference between Game Art %26amp; Design and Web Design %26amp; Interactive Media?
It sounds like Interactive media would be what you're looking for. Web design is for webpages, Game art is self explanatory, and Interactive media seems like a broader term.

You're best off calling the school in question and having them explain it to you. Also, look at job postings for the type of job you're looking for, and see which degrees they require (if any).

Good luck! What's the difference between Game Art %26amp; Design and Web Design %26amp; Interactive Media?
The difference is very visible to their names! When you say Game art, it only focuses on the website of games. But in general terms, then it should Web design.

  • How to make state of the art 3d game?

i am studying on computer science. i am interested in making games. i have the modeling and animation tools like 3dsmax, maya ,softiamge|xsi.

but what i need more to make a state of the art game for pc, xbox and ps3 ? i have my few friends working with me . what should we do now?How to make state of the art 3d game?
You have many cheap options to start Game Dev with some great tools available.

For free you can get Xbox XNA programming tools for xbox 360 (well almost free, its free, but you have to sign up to be a gold member to get all the best stuff) its about $100 a year. Still super cheap. Thats all C# based, and you can publish your game to xbol and sell it !!! pretty darn good.

PS3 has something similar, for home-dev, but not as open or complete as the 360 system, and you cant yest sell your games on the online shop.

Next up, if you buy a game from Valve that uses the source engine... you also get all of the tools for free, its powerful, and used in many hit games. The down side is if you want to publish your game then you have to pay for licensing the engine when you are ready to publish.

The Unreal engine works in a similar way to Source. You get it free, but have to pay to license it.... very expensive.

If your game is good enough, you could find a publisher to pay the license fee and publish your game.

You can also buy some real engines for cheap such as the Torque engine... I think its only $100 to $300... a bargain. But dont expect full support.

Another new option is the Unity engine... its newly released on PC and runs your program in a web browser (similar to flash, but in full glorious 3D). indie license is about $400 and pro, about $1500 This is very reasonably priced for the features, and allows you to self publish your game on your own hosted website/server without a publisher.

Or you can go hardcore, just use DirectX-SDK whihc is free , and build your own engine from the ground-up.

So there you have it, many options.

in summary.... if you dont care about selling your game... you could go for any of the above.

I you are serious about selling on the cheap, then go for XNA, Torque, or Unity.

To go all out high end on everything... you'll need to make your own engine, or go Source or Unreal or other fully priced engine.

    Good luck

to get something to move, do you have to design every single pixel of movement the user can make?I wan to start making game art for iphone apps but i dont know where or how to start, any tips please?
Have you thought about working with an iphone app developer? I will give you the link to the company I have used in the past. That way you can make sure your app is done correctly and you get the most bang for your buck. Best of luckI wan to start making game art for iphone apps but i dont know where or how to start, any tips please?
Okay, look up sprite and sprite animation. You do it with any paint program such as photoshop gimp or even paint. Most of the sprites I see are saved as either gif or pcx files, but most of the iphone app developers I know -- and I know a few -- are small businesmen whose vendors are long-term contacts. They're not looking for anyone. Still, while Jobs is trying to keep a walled garden around development for the iPhone the techniques used for most of these apps-- including games -- have been around since -- mostly -- the eighties and we were practicing them on PCs before we were on other devices. Apple hardware has always been optimized for presentation graphics and frankly, I normally don't do color, so GIMP's eccentricities that way only become a major annoyance to me when I am taking something to a commercial printer. I probably wouldn't use it for this. In fact, both because of Jobs's obsesseion and because some (NOT all but they are around and I'm related to one) people we used to call MacFascist because if you don't use a mac then you are not serious about anything important incomputing. Literally you will hear stories about people who got their first jobs in the business just because they happened to know how to use a mac.

Anyhow, before trying to do iphone-specific game art I would search around for sprite animation programs and try to build up a portfolio of some kind -- maybe some animated gifs and some animation sheets -- to prove you know how to handle what you are trying to do. The portfolio, or maybe dvd or flash drive, will be your calling card for jobs.

How to get into video game art and design?

I'm just wondering how challenging is video game art and design? Could someone tell me what its like? And how much more challenging is it if your not a very good drawer. Because I have good literary skills and good computer skills, but my drawing skills just suck i mean I couldn't draw if my life depended on it.How to get into video game art and design?
I am 24 right now and i was once plagued with the same issue of not possessing good drawing skills. I went to the art institute of chicago's traning session which lasted 2 weeks. It was basically outlining and giving you an idea of what the entire 3 year program would be like. I too had good literary skills and computer skills. I found that there are different aspects of the game creation industry. Much of the good game design artists are Extremely gifted artists. The Art Institutes does have a very good program that allows for beginners to get trained on how to draw, but in the long run i did not go through with it because. of all the great artists that i was surrounded by (there would have been no way i could compete.) If you really want to do this then i would recommend going to one of their training sessions for prospective students and see for yourself if you are still interested.

If you want to work as the concept artist for video games/films etc. you will have to apply to mainly illustration programs. However, some schools are now offering majors that deal heavily with what is called "entertainment design"---

Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California is the top school for this area of study.

Other great illustration schools include School of Visual Arts (New York), and the Rhode Island School of Design (Rhode Island).Schools for concept art in video games?
Also, I think the Maryland Institute College of Art will have a [video game art?] program as a major of study so you might want to look into that~~

I've had this discussion with some iends recently, they say video games are art, but I don`t agree with that. What do you people think?Do you think the video game is an art?
Yes, Video games take skill. Art takes skill therfore..it is a form of art.
The dedication and skill taken puts it at an art form, not to mention all the time taken to make the game, if the player is not the artist then it's the desinger, like English is an art, so is cooking.

Do you think the video game is an art?
It's like the difference between erotic art and pornography. You can tell by looking at them side by side, some are art, some are just pictures of nekkid folks doin it. If you spend enough time around video games, the stories, general feel, visual aspects, etc will stand out on some of them. That's when it's art. Just because you're able to interact with it doesn't make it less valid.
Yes, just think of how much effort, time and creativeness it takes to make the art, graphics, story and gameplay.Do you think the video game is an art?
    No,there's no aesthetics in playing,just social pleasure.period.
They can be when done right, like movies.
I guess anything that engulfs the life of chubby/zitty twelve year olds to the point of social alienation deserves further examination.
Of course they are art! Just look at all the marvelous details and graphics that go into them. This takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
Playing a game is definately not an art, but creating one IS.
    no...
    depends what you mean
I would say that video games are definatley an art form just as much as a movie is. video games infact encompass many different art forms such as Composers, Musicians, Artists, Graphic Artists, Voice Actors, and Writers. I would most definately say that it is an art form.
yeah it is in a way .... look at the details in the games
of course it is art look at how much work and creativity goes into creating a game, and the ideas are art to begin with then someone draws the concept of the game then someone has to create a story line i mean the whole process is just amazing
I personally do not fill that the video game is an art. It takes a lot of technology to make a video game and again the game is part of developing logic and more or less played with mind, where as the art is totally different. Art is the expression of an individual that usually comes from heart and it has nothing to do with the mond or logic. so videogame is not an art.
yes"of course its created by an imagination is a part of arts
Art is defined as anything which is created by a person which is asthetically pleasing. Theoretically most things are art. If you take a bicycle it is art as someone took the time to design it and make it look pleasing to the buyer. Computer games are an art form as they are carefully designed and scripted by artists and graphic designers before being programmed.
Sure it is. Why would you think it was not an art form. Art can be interpreted in numerous ways. Just as a paper bag floating in the breeze could be considered art.

Also what is exactly is game development. I am thinking about getting a job in the video game industry and was wondering if anybody had any advice or tips thank you. What jobs are there for game art and game development?
First of a Game Artist, is also called a 3D Artist, it involves 3D modelling, usually using 3DMax or Maya. Just search 3D modelling and you can see. Also concept artist may fall in this category. Another thing, is Game Development is a big field, you can go into business in the game development, artist, programmer, design, music etc.. Also Game Designer would be the person that designs the levels, its a technical side, writing up rules for the game, gameplay etc. Another thing is game development isn't as easy as it may sound, just because you like playing game, doesn't mean you will enjoy making them.

I am no industry expert but i am a student, I have done alot of research on this and also have worked on some 3d games, you can also try that go to blenderartist or any other site, and try joining a team theres many teams aimed at "noobs".

Other games would be great. Those relating to social skills would be even better!Fun ideas for classroom Language Arts (or others) games?
    1. Mad Libs - use ones you buy, or create some examples and have students create their own (they have to identify the part of speech that their classmates have to brainstorm)

    2. Flyswatter game - Write the parts of speech on the board, then have students identify the part of speech of a certain word in a sentence you read by hitting their flyswatter on the correct word on the board. Whoever gets it right stays up while whoever gets it wrong (or last) gives their flyswatter to another student).

    3. Another possibility is to have students complete normal worksheets on the topic, but to work in small groups, and for each to have a role to play (Reader, Recorder, etc.) to complete the worksheet. You can make it a contest between the groups to see who gets the most correct.

    And some other ideas:

    http://blog.scholastic.com/ink_splot_26/鈥?/a>

Serious question: Are video games art?

I consider great, classic movies like Forrest Gump, Star Wars, The Wizard Of Oz, The Sound Of Music, Saving Private Ryan The Dark Knight, The Matrix Back to the Future, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, etc. to be art.

I also consider groundbreaking, classic video games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Half-life, Half-life 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Call Of Duty, etc. to be art at the same level as great movies.

Why do many people consider movies art, and not video games? What's the difference?

I consider myself different from many video gamers, because when I am playing a video game for the first time, I don't do things in the game that I don't believe my character would do. For example, I refused to smash scientists in the face with a crowbar in Half-life or shoot my fellow soldiers in the Call of Duty series, while having no second thoughts about throwing a few grenades into a crowded street in Grand theft Auto: Vice City.

I realize that not all gamers do this, and I can understand not calling shooting human soldiers in the back in Halo: Combat Evolved art, but when a video game is created to allow a player to experience the story, in the same way that a movie does, I don't know how someone can dismiss it as teenagers wasting time.

What are your thoughts?Serious question: Are video games art?
yes! especially games like Kingdom Hearts. Its story and everything in it is pretty much amazing. And how else do you get the characters if you don't draw them before virtualizing them?

Are there any good online martial arts games?

I know there are a few martial arts games, or fighting games in the same style as mortal kombat or street fighter but they're all very poorly made and mostly in flash. There are also a few MMO's that exist but they're Korean and hardly a martial arts game. I'm looking for a decent free game to fight online with other opponents. streetfighteronline.com isn't really my thing so don't recommend that. any help would be awesome. Are there any good online martial arts games?

  • Video Games: Art or to be forgotten?

Recent discussions have appeared all over the interwebz and gaming magazines concerning the immortality of certain games. Critics have claimed that games are a childish form of entertainment and will never be considered an art form.

So, my question to you, how do you stand on this issue? If you think games are art, please list three examples and explain your self. If not, please list your reasons.

Being a VG board, I know I'll get more support than rejection, but still, I wanna see Y!'s opinion.

I think video games not only can be, but in some cases ARE art already. Examples:

    1. Mass Effect-The epic story of Commander Shepard and his/her crew is a weaving tale that is as deep as it is entertaining. The character development, especially in ME2, is greater than that of any movie and many books. It is a story of desperation and violent justice in search of achieving a higher goal.

    2. Bioshock-The twisted denizens of the underwater Utopia of Rapture force the most difficult ethical choices on the player: Sacrifice the weak for the greater good? Am I in control, or am I a pawn? How far is TOO far? Bioshock causes emotional stress in the player greater than any movie I've watched, book I've read, or other game I've played.

    3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion- Nothing can be said about this game that hasn't already been stated, restated, and stated again. This masterpiece of literary achievement tells an epic tale of heroism in the face of certain annihilation that cannot be matched. The sheer detail in this game causes its immortality to become immediately evident.Video Games: Art or to be forgotten?
Yes, I would say they are that, but their real potential just hasn't been brought out as far as being for mature audiences goes. The critics are adult people, who are criticizing other adult people who play video games, right? I am drawing that conclusion anyway. It really does seem like video games are stuck in some sort of "baby sitter" stage. Probably most video game sales have to do with parents buying their kids video games to keep them humored and out of their hair throughout the day (that is what I mean when I say "baby sitter" anyway). Most video games made seem to be aimed at kids or teenage boys. And games rated M for mature are just teenage boy type games with an extra dose of violence/gore, sexual content, or foul language thrown in. I don't think those things actually make a game "mature" myself. Few games made are mature in the sense of being intellectually or mentally mature, and have the kind of meaning to them that adults can appreciate and relate to. I would really like to find a game (and mature as in actually mature) with a good storyline myself, but it seems like most games made are intended for online gaming. I tend to think that you happened to bring up those particular games because they do stand out for storyline, though you may not have really been aware of it.

It is all about game-play now and online gaming. Given the price of video games it isn't hard to understand why things have taken this trend. I would like to just find a good solo game with a good storyline myself, but they hardly make games like that anymore, and even if they did, I don't want to pay $50 or $60 or more for a game that I would only play though once or twice. A solo game would be more likely to be a rental type of game. People wanting to play such a game would probably rent it rather than buy the game, and the developers of a solo game aren't going to make enough money to pay for the cost of creating it, as well as have money for further development of more games. So it is all about online gaming now. It seems as if storyline has just become some excuse to create a game in the first place, so people can go online and play with one another (the thing that really counts, or at least the game makers see it that way). The sad thing about it all is that anything is possible with virtual reality, anything!!!!!! Video gaming just hasn't come of age yet. Computer graphics are used to make the special effects in movies as most people know. ... Why? ... Because some scenes in movies could not be filmed any other way and still achieve the sense of realism they want. Anything is possible with virtual reality, and video gaming is still stuck in a baby sitter stage. It has all become a bit perplexing for me, and has had me wondering if I should just forget about gaming myself at times. I certainly haven't been quite as excited about them as I used to be.
A lot of games today can be very artistic, like Super Mario Galaxy (and it's sequel), The Conduit, Red Steel 2, the F-Zero games, and the Metroid games. Ignore Roger Ebert, he's just an unnecessarily opinionated windbag.Video Games: Art or to be forgotten?
Meh, everything has it's naysayers. Movies, at the beginning, were probably thought of as not an art form, but here we are now. Give it 20 years.
    Cool Question

OK I Believe that Video Games These Days are a Very Important Art

Because Lots of people are Using Video Games to Learn and Develop Certain Skills

I for example : i learn new Words by Reading the subtitles and Keeping with the game's Storyline

And its a really cool way to waste Time!

But as an art..The people Who Create The Games Are Really Talented Designers and Gaming Professionals So They work really Hard To make A Game...Just Like making a movie

MY OPINION :DVideo Games: Art or to be forgotten?
I think whoever said video games are not art they are an idiot and obviously only think about the bad aspects of the video game. He's only thinking of the lazy people who play them and don't have a life.

Men and women work really hard and spend tons of hours on the creation of a game. They use there skills and their imagination to produce such complex story lines. Every character or villain in a game was drawn out and converted into a 3D images on a computer. I believe with the most certainty of all that it is considered art. If paintings that look like a child could have done it is considered art then childish entertainment can be considered that as well.
i think they are art. i think video games are the next evolution in art. art always tries to draw you in, a painting, music, a movie, it draws you in. but these are all passive the thing about video games now is that you can have movie quality story lines, characters, voice acting etc and it's interactive. it's more immersive than it's ever been before.

i think when the critics, being a bit elitist and probably a bit technophobic, think of games they think of sonic the hedgehog, little platformers, games that i played when i was 9. i don't think they realise how far they have come and how high the bar is set. that games these days are not only complex, they are intelligent.

3 examples well mass effect, especially mass effect 2, goes without saying. the character development is, ironically since they are aliens, so believable and emotionally involving.

red dead redemption. people would consider the good, the bad and the ugly to be art, i think that game is comparable. the story is complex, and despite being set 100 years ago you can see the subtext and the many allusions to modern political issues. and also just the beautiful scenery.

3rd example i'm going to go with Halo. especially the 3rd one or odst although i am looking forward to reach. i think something that really sets halo apart is it's music. especially the more sombre moments odst had a lot of that in a lot of ways that game reminded me of blade runner
There are two difficulties in answering this question. The first is that art is hard to define, the second that many people don't know the difference between "being art" and "having art in them".

To me art is a man-made object that has no function that can be rationally explained. The function of video games is entertainment but since that's not a necessity in someone's life I would say it fits in the definition I just gave you. However, I think a work of fiction, whether it's a movie, novel or video games, should have more than just entertainment value to be considered art.

Let's make the distinction between an art film and a purely entertaining one. I wouldn't call Die Hard art, even though I love it to death. I would call Star Wars art because it tells a universal story based on mythology and history and obviously the emotional impact on its many fans is huge.

Mass Effect tells a great story and had a strong emotional impact on me. I would definitely call that art. Bioshock is a perfect combination of music and imagery. I would also call that art. Both games are not pure art but a combination of art and entertainment. That's inevitable when it comes to video games.

The majority of video games are made purely for entertainment values. Race games, for instance.

Roger Ebert said games shouldn't be considered art because Michael Jordan doesn't call his game art. The difference is that sports aren't fiction. You'd think a film critic would know the difference between fiction and a sports game.
