I think you could learn it; I have a twelve-year-old brother who can do it.

For 2D games, try Game Maker.

They have a FAQ, some manuals, and a forum on the website, you should be able to do it.

For 3D games (this is more difficult), try Blender:

Download the program from blender.org. You can learn about all aspects of creating a game from the Blender Wiki (wiki.blender.org).

This tutorial should help to get you started:

This should help you learn about the game engine and how to make games:

I'm amazed at the ignorant answers on here..

At any age if you have the motivation and the smarts to learn something, you can learn it. You won't reach the level of the pros who make retail games, but that requires quite a lot of skill and high-price equipment.

But it will be more difficult for you to learn at 13, and you will need to be more devoted. Start off simple using a program like Flash to get used to how coding languages work (I'll add a link at the bottom.)

And try picking up a book from a library near you about C++, Direct-X and 3DSMax.

I think you may find it's harder than you thought. It requires a lot of code to make even the simplest of things happen in a game. But if you truly want to end up doing this for a living, It's worth getting basic knowledge now and then taking classes for it later on.

The best thing you can do at your age is play all the games you love and study them. See how they are designed, how they play. Think up ways you could build upon the games to make them better. Practice drawing as well, because a lot of game design requires some skill with art (e.g., sketching an idea you have to show the rest of your team)

Another good way to begin.. Mod games you like. Games like Half Life/Counter Strike, The Sims, etc. are all good games where you can make custom content and get a feel for how it works.

Many colleges now have classes on video game design as well, so when you get older you should seriously consider taking a course if you enjoy games and think you want to make them. But mostly just keep yourself involved in the gaming community, and keep smart.

You can do just about anything if you want to bad enough and work hard enough.
