Are video games an art?

Video games can definitely be art. However, not all video games have artistic value, at least not in the traditional sense. As you say, art in games is not just about what your looking at. Nor is it just about the story, or cutscenes. Its about the overall experience.

For example, Half-Life 2 is a great example of art in a game. The art of the experience is not simply about the graphics or even the story, but about feeling that you have a place in the game world. It's about experiencing the suffering of the people around you, and taking a part in fighting the tyranny. Another good example is Mass Effect. The art in that game goes beyond the story. You can influence the direction events take and observe the consequences of your decisions. That's something other artistic mediums can't do. In a book or film, you can read about/see events. In a game you experience, take part in, and influence them.|||Rather depends, most games are different from eachother depending on their genre. Role-playing games (from what i think) are the best ideas of art since they have beautiful landscapes and amazing storylines. But basically only some simple roleplaying games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest since they are the main games of RPG's|||I would say because they draw the characters first and other stuff before the make it. Then they make them alive in a digital world :)|||that would b a yes.
