You can't. That's part of the deal.
From my experiences with most mentally retarded people, they enjoy doing the same things everyone else likes to do. In the group home where I work, I found pictures of eggs that the clients could color. They enjoyed coloring them, and then when they were done, the staff hung them on strings from the ceiling.

Perhaps you could contact an elementary school arts and crafts teacher to come up with some ideas. Otherwise, you could go to Hobby Lobby or some other crafts stores and just pick things up that sound fun. All you can do is test and try different things to see what they enjoy doing.Where can i find art and crafts also games for mentally retarded adults?
To be honest I am more concerned that you call them retarded...developmentally delayed is the proper and kinder term.
Amy Beware gave some good tips for you. Another thought is to call local senior citizen homes %26amp; speak to their own recreation person %26amp; see what sort of things they do with their seniors; it might be on par with some things you can do with your adults. Good luck %26amp; God Bless!Where can i find art and crafts also games for mentally retarded adults?
Your best bet is the library and look for childrens craft books. The books are free to use and most of the crafts aren't too complicated or expensive to make, most are made from every day materials.

The same goes for games. Look in the kids sections you'll find something there that might be of interest, for your special needs adults.

I hope this helps and I'm glad you enjoy helping others. That's what it's all about.
BAT-tard is correct....it is part of the deal.
