Because just like any other piece art they involve design, imagination, creativity, and some are just beautiful to see. Some of them even have wonderful stories to go along with your game play.
They really can make your imagination come to life. For example, I remember clearly almost 12 years ago when I first played EverQuest. It was incredible to any fan of fantasy to become a dark elf or a troll. Now I currently play World of Warcraft and some of the area in the game are just beautiful.
Art's pretty subjective so basically anything can be considered art (including relieving yourself on photographs and mounting it). Video games contain tons of created assets (like models, concept artwork, etc.) and like movies/TV shows each has their own style or design. Video games are different than those 2 cause they're interactive so each player's experience is usually different. (Although designers most times try to guide a player so that you experience the game like they want you to...to a degree anyhow). In what way would you consider video games art?
Video games are art, just like a painting or sculpture is art. If the game didn't look good, People wouldn't play it. It actually takes a long time to make a game look good.
Well, there are tons of games out there that were just created to make money, such as almost every single game in the FPS genre. Some games, however, were created to appeal to a specific audience ("hardcore" gamers, if you will), and didn't sell very well because they didn't appeal to many people. E.g. Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, Grim Fandango.
Basically, I think that a game is artistic if it's unique and was made specifically to just be a good game, rather than to make a lot of money. In what way would you consider video games art?
I think games can be considered art depending on the graphical presentation they produce in-game. Like in Final Fantasy, when you summon a creature, there is a cinematic cut scene where the monster does its this.
Also Obuki the game involving a white wolf on the PS2 where you have to paint to go through the game. Thats pretty much art and game play.
Lastly, I think the Sims is a great game with a lot of art in it. It involves interior and exterior designs with lots of options. One of my friend actually used the Sims 2 to redesign his house in Phuket.
So basically, games can be art depending on the game play it introduces, and the graphical presentation it provides to the players and viewers. All Metal Gear games are cinematic art, for example.
Well art is usually creative, and to make a good videogame you need to be somewhat creative.
video game creation is definately an art form. Art is a way to express yourself like painting, drawing, sculpting. Creating video games is another way for someone to express themselves. Usually through a story of some sort, like a movie. Video games are just more interactive than other art forms. It also takes many highly skilled artists to create video games. And these artistist are very skilled. Nowadays, the defintion of art and what people consider art to be is changing and everybody has their own idea of what art is. Art is very open to interpetation. Putting a red circle on a canvas may mean something to the artist, but to others, it's just a dumb red circle. I suggest you learn about the process of video games and decide for yourself if it is art.
